Suburban Jounrey #poem & #painting by Nikos Laios

Friday night,
The work day has ended,
I’m on a train gliding through
The outer suburbs of Sydney
Heading down to the South Coast.

It’s dark and cold outside,
I have my earphones on
Listening to ambient music,
Ethereal and fluid as the
Train races over smooth tracks,
And then another train passes
By in the opposite direction,
The moonlight glinting
On train carriage
Windows.

I see heads bowed down;
Sleeping, praying, reading,
Listening to music or watching
The world and their lives
Pass them by on the
Tired streets of
Their lives.

I watch the buildings
Whir by and the colours
Of suburbs change
And consider it all;
Our existence one
Journey through
Time and space,
And then one day
We are no longer there,
Remembered by no one.
