TORCH – a parable by David Sparenberg

“Now it is up to you,” the old philosopher says, handing the flaming torch to the youth standing before him. “It is your charisma. You are chosen by the god of time.”
“Father, where shall I go? In what direction?”
The elder answers: “Carry the torch to every community and village along the way. Be sure to leave no one out. Whether the wind is on your face or at your back, you must keep the torch lighted and keep yourself moving.”
The young torchbearer looks far down the road the two stand on. He questions, “What is my goal? What is my destination?”
The old philosopher places his hand on the youth’s shoulder and answers. He says, “Go until you reach the horizon.”
Puzzlement in his eyes, the young one replies, “Father, nobody reaches the horizon.”
“You have spoken the truth. The horizon is always before us,” says the old one. “Still, you are charged to go on. Until one day, after yearsof discipline, you too pass the torch to another generation. As I have now passed this fiery light to you.
“The torch is a symbol. The flame is alive. Hold the torchhigh and make it visible. The responsibility is sacred.”
