Hilma af Klint was born in 1862 into a Swedish naval family, a child of mathematical precision and scientific curiosity. She was one of the first women to be admitted to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, where she excelled in portraiture and botanical illustration.
On the surface, she was a conventional, academically trained artist. Beneath it, she was something far more radical: a medium, a spiritualist, a woman who believed that she could communicate with higher intelligences through her paintings.
From 1896, she and four other women formed a group they called "The Five." They held séances, recorded automatic drawings, and sought contact with spiritual guides they called "the High Masters." It was through this practice that af Klint came to understand her purpose: she was to paint "the great images of existence," not for public display, but as a message for a future humanity that might finally be able to receive it.
