Stake #Poem by Jan Sand

Out of the twisted immensities of spiral fabrications
Within the microscopic dot where we began.
The gift of existence through time is presented freely
To do with as we can.

Inheritance and circumstance interlock
To warp and woof
The tapestry of possibility we grapple with as self.
That protein swirl spins opportunity
Seeks immunity from oblivion,
And often fails.

Never mind.
We set our sails to explore,
To manage, out of whatevers, to swerve disaster.
Nail our stake for territory in this universe,
To remain to sustain
A moment or a century.

The seekers after meaning, purpose
Might well discuss their points
With that meteor that chose
To miracle dinosaurs into birds,
Convince mice to evolve
To leave that footprint on the Moon.

The wrecking crew that we’ve become
May be the plow to furrow Earth
To encourage life and death to give breadth
To monkeyshines of human minds
To move along, sing other songs
To echo through the galaxy.

Love and kindness holds human mindness,
Cockeyed delusions with confusions,
Quite alien to this cosmos that delights
In smashing suns, collapsing constellations,
Administering that Second Law
Towards eternal starless nights.

Life and death are that invention
Exclusively possessed intention.
Surely, even it cannot not know
How and where it wants to go.
But this is no concern of ours.

This is our interim of blue skies
And flowers.
This, sector out of time and space
That we could love, not disgrace.
It’s up to us , right now, to decide
To give this time
The proper kind of human face.
