First published in 1865, this is a humorous science fantasy novel, which tells the story of the president of a post-American Civil War gun club in Baltimore, his rival, a Philadelphia maker of armour and a Frenchman. Together they build an enormous sky-facing Columbiad space gun and launch themselves in a spaceship, heading to a Moon landing.

Jules Verne, was born on February 8, 1828 in Nantes, France and died March 24, 1905 in Amiens, prolific French author whose writings laid much of the foundation of modern science fiction.
