Gullet Discipline #Poem by Jan Sand

The sufficiencies of caloric input
Must be made with nods to gods of broccoli,
The gains of grains and roots or fruits
That promotes regards towards rewards
For muscles, brains and hormone fiddlesticks
That kicks the system entire to perform its tricks
To fuel the mechanics of life itself.

Humanity, like any field of mushrooms,
Flock of sparrows, cave of bats,
Is fitted by the rigid rules of its agenda
To graze on nature’s offerings that tax
Existencies of evolution’s variant creativities
To permit the compliance of the whole
To perform its strifes so that the whole
Gains purchase to subsist.

Rabbits, mice, kangaroos and shrews
Cannot outrange this rigidity in conformity
To totality or the whole shatters into shards
Of unsustainability to slowly regain
Internal compatibility to reconnect, reform
Into sturdy integration of collective norm.

We humans must accept we are just one piece
Of the total jigsaw puzzle that must fit
Or be replaced by something else in this matrix
Of life and life and life that patternizes
Where and how we live within this complex mix.
