The Great Illusion #Poem & #Painting by Nikos Laios
In the age of sand,
They settled on the edges of
Heaving wind-blown dunes
Red and raw under a
Blue sky and burning sun,
And lived with the humming
Sounds of the last oil wells
Sucking at the Earth,
And the smell of petrol
Fumes floating in the breeze.
They lived in the grand
Decaying glass and steel
Towers lining the gulf,
And prayed to Allah
And for the death of Jews,
Because they had blamed
Them for all their
Misfortunes.
Yet the whole Earth
Was burning up in misery
And economic chaos,
For the age of scapegoats
Was at an end and
The burgeoning masses
Were on the move searching
For that last oasis.
For all they had
Left was hope,
And they chased
A great illusion of
A new golden age
That no longer existed,
And found an uncertain
Future of disharmony
And discord for the
Age of milk and honey
was at end and only
A few flickering flames
Of prosperity were left.
