Silent Complicity #Poem #Painting by Nikos Laios

They were silent
In their complicity,
Apartments raided,
Shops damaged,
The old Jewish
Lady’s apartment
Broken into by
Hitler Youth thugs

Rummaging for
Jewellery,
And when this
Frail old Jewish
Lady jumped out
Of her apartment
Window to her death,
You all looked down at
The sprawled bloodied
Figure on the cobblestone
Courtyard and said nothing,
You were all silent in your complicity,
As your were when he came to power,
As you were when the pogrom started;
But hopefully one day in the future this
Hatred and antisemitism will be no more,
Will future generations be silent
In their complicity as we are today?
