On July 9, 1790, the narrow coastal channels of the Baltic Sea erupted into an inferno of wood, iron and black powder. The Second Battle of Svensksund remains the largest naval clash in Baltic history; a dramatic two-day epic where an underdog Swedish force shattered the imperial ambitions of Catherine the Great.
Yet, to look at Svensksund purely as a clash of ships is to miss the point. As we explore in this issue, it was a grand, high-stakes gamble that fundamentally reshaped regional geopolitics, left an indelible mark on modern geography and left behind a literal time capsule on the ocean floor.
The sheer scale of the battle forms the spine of our coverage. We chart the chronological narrative of the battle itself, highlighting the brilliant defensive positioning of Swedish Lieutenant-Colonel Carl Olof Cronstedt. He lured the overconfident Russian commander, Prince Charles of Nassau-Siegen, into a deadly choke point. The Russian fleet was utterly bottlenecked, leading to a catastrophic defeat.
