For nineteen years, I adhered to a certain tradition and pattern, every December 20th Ovi magazine celebrated its birthday. It was more than just a day to mark the passing of another year; it was a vibrant expression of creativity, collaboration, and resilience. The day always unfolded in a familiar pattern. One of Ovi's contributors would pen the anniversary editorial, setting the tone with their reflections and insights. Asa and I would follow with our own editorials, recounting shared memories, behind-the-scenes anecdotes from the early issues, and outlining our aspirations for the future. The day’s centrepiece was always the cover, a highlight crafted with meticulous care to encapsulate the spirit of the milestone.

Every year, the birthday celebration was a collective effort. Contributors and friends of Ovi magazine would send in their birthday messages and articles, infusing the occasion with warmth and camaraderie. A specially designed birthday cartoon added a touch of humour and levity, embodying the essence of Ovi, a unique blend of serious discourse and lighthearted creativity. These rituals were more than routine; they were a testament to the enduring spirit of the magazine and the community it had built over the years.
Asa and I took particular joy in sharing stories from the magazine’s early days. We’d reminisce about the challenges of launching Ovi, the brainstorming ideas, the unavoidable mistakes and the unexpected moments that shaped its identity. There were tales of triumph and resilience, of ideas that blossomed and others that faltered. We often laughed about our early missteps, the technical glitches, and the learning curves we navigated. Through it all, the vision of Ovi magazine as a space for free expression and thought-provoking dialogue remained steadfast.
However, as the nineteenth anniversary approached, something unprecedented occurred, a very dark situation so jarring that it disrupted our established rhythm and marked the end of an era. It wasn’t the kind of surprise wrapped in ribbons and bows. Instead, it was a sobering reality, a well established con that forced us to confront the fragility of our endeavour. Those last three months leading up to the nineteenth anniversary were nothing short of a nightmare. The details are still vivid in my mind, and while time may eventually dull their edge, for now, they remain stark reminders of a turbulent period.
In the end Ovi magazine faced challenges that tested our resilience to its limits. External pressures and unforeseen obstacles converged in a perfect storm. The magazine, which had always been a labour of love, began to feel like a battleground. Each day brought new complications, and the sense of uncertainty was palpable and doubt overwhelmed me.
But all that led into a transformation to something almost new with a lot elements from the old and the seventh day The Ovi was born.
And here we are, twenty years since the inaugural issue of Ovi magazine. The landscape has changed significantly. The layout is different, reflecting the evolution of design trends and the need for adaptability. The environment in which we operate has shifted, shaped by advancements in technology and changes in how content is consumed. Even the logistics behind the scenes have undergone a transformation, streamlined to meet the demands of a new social media ruled age. Despite these changes, the essence of Ovi remains intact. We are still standing, and we stand tall.
Reflecting on this two-decade journey, I am struck by the resilience and creativity that have defined Ovi’s story. It began as a bold experiment, a platform for diverse voices and perspectives. Over the years, it grew into a vibrant community, a space where ideas could flourish and dialogue could thrive. Ovi has always been more than a magazine; it’s been a living, breathing entity shaped by the contributions of countless individuals. Writers, artists, readers, all have played a role in crafting its narrative.
Therefore to our readers, contributors, and friends, I want to express my deepest gratitude. Your support, encouragement, and participation have been the lifeblood of Ovi magazine and yes a huge motivation for the restart.
You have been with us through the highs and lows, sharing in our triumphs and standing by us in times of struggle. Your voices have enriched Ovi, making it a true reflection of the diverse and dynamic community it serves.
From the bottom of my heart,
Thank you all!
