#eBook The rise of illiberal democracies by Thanos Kalamidas

20 plus one authoritarians completely out of the closet
We are living in an age of political illusions. The old binaries, democracy versus dictatorship, the free world versus authoritarianism, have blurred.

The brutal regimes of the 20th century have not disappeared; they have evolved. Today’s authoritarian leaders cloak themselves in democratic rituals, giving speeches at international summits, signing treaties, and maintaining the formal trappings of elections and parliaments, all while hollowing out institutions from within.

This book examines a more insidious breed of power: the authoritarian in democratic clothing. These leaders operate not through overt terror, but through subtle, calculated erosion. Independent media is co-opted or silenced, laws are weaponized to disqualify or intimidate opponents, courts are manipulated to ensure impunity, and digital platforms are exploited to spread disinformation and rally loyal bases. Dissent is reframed as treason, while the leader’s interests are conflated with the state’s.

Thanos Kalamidas, a multipublished writer, cartoonist and illustrator; born and grew up in a picturesque neighbourhood on the mountainside of Hymettus in Athens, Greece. Then his life took him to Berlin, Germany and to London, UK for studies. After a brief stay in Yorkshire he moved his life to Paris, France while working in Tokyo, Japan and in Cape Town, South Africa. In the last 25 years he became a permanent Scandinavian resident and recently, in his glorious sixth decade, he moved to a scenic village in the Växjö area.
